actually, i'm pretty sure they do. i believe that ERC is the first college to offer WiFi across their entire area of campus, including dorms. |

is there still wireless all over ERC? I thought wireless was not allowed by Resnet for the dorms and apts on campus cuz of illegal dl issues and stuff |

Resnet provides wireless. Personal wireless routers are prohibited though. Wireless is weak in my bedroom but it's fine out in the apartment... and this is the second year of not having a wireless box in the common area when I'm supposed to have one. Resnet bitches. |

You got it. There's no wireless box in my apartment, but the apartment directly above ours has one. The signal strength goes up and down occasionally, but it's still fast. |

Exactly. And using kismet/packet sniffer, you can grab WEP keys from other wireless networks (for off-campus nerds like me) for free! The problem is; if they're CSE majors, they realize somebody's packet sniffing, traceroute and firebomb your ass. |

That's why you don't go to Warren/Sixth, but hit up ERC and Revelle.

| Actually you don't come to ERC because the wireless here is S-H-I-T. The only thing that is shitter is the ethernet. Resnet refuses to acknowledge there's a problem. Yes, my cable is plugged in and working, motherfuckas. |

That's totally not true. Wireless sucks, but it's definitely present on several campuses.

The good ones will just throw your IP onto a packet counting table, take your passwords and deduct the cost off your credit card or bank account each month. Payment option is whatever they manage to sniff first.
If they didn't want you on their networks they'd have used mac filtering. (This, by the way, is a terrible legal argument) |

The wireless in Muir is generally good. There is wireless throughout the quad and also in the suite lounges of the dorms (or at least there was in mine last year). I usually don't get it in my apartment, but I am also on the side closest to the beach. I think some of the apartments closer to the quad get wireless (at least sometimes). Hope that helps |

mac spoofing yo. Hardware authentication my ass. The whole reason why that's a bad idea is thanks to the fact that the software (local administered address) can override the hardware (burnt-in address) mac address, while good in theory, for connecting to wi-fi hotspots anonymously, etc, that just ruins mac filtering as a security function.
There's really no good reason why anybody who needs high levels of security should use wireless. Agree/Disagree, dj? (i'm talking 802.11a-g, at least) |

Oh, security in wireless is horrible... agree with you on that fully.

| Sixth college has wireless, but it's pretty choppy (don't try and play any games on it). The wall to computer ethernet works pretty good, a bit of lag spikes sometimes but overall, it's not bad. |

| There is wireless in all the upper apts and the ovt/ovl area. If your in ovl the wirless is kinda spotty but its usable for basic stuff. Res Halls and Lowers dont have wirelesss yet. There is wireless in fireside lounge though. Otherwise, hook up the LAN line. |

If wireless turns out to suck in my dorm, and I connect a NAT-enabled wireless router with encryption + no broadcast of SSID + MAC address filtering to the ethernet jack in the dorm and set the router's MAC address to be the same one I registered to connect my computer,
a) would this work?
b) would anyone at ACS ever find out? |

No. At least nobody ever bugged me, and I didn't bother hiding the ESSID, etc. |

a) Yes.
b) Depends it's not like they usually go around looking for WAPs via connecting to them, they look for network traffic, but if you just register the thing like you're supposed to they honestly won't mind. If when you attach a device and don't register it that they care.
Just register the router and then you're actually completely within policy in running it and you don't have to worry about it. |

| ERC campus has a wireless internet connections because one of my friends is actually using it. So I'm sure they have it. Otherwise, they will be complained because it s included in their fees. |
